UCO/Lick Observatory Electronics Laboratory The University of California Observatories operates two observatories: Keck , located top of Mauna Kea volcano on the big island, Hawaii, and Lick , located on Mount Hamilton, near San Jose, California. The Lick electronics lab supports the Astronomy program at University of California Observatories / Lick Observatory . We design and construct electronic and electro-mechanical devices for the new astronomical instruments used on the Lick telescopes on Mount Hamilton, and the Keck telescopes in Hawaii. We also provide technical support for these instruments. Early projects include the ESI ( E chellette S pectrograph and I mager) located at Keck Observatory, the PFCAM ( P rime F ocus CAM era) located on the Shane 3-Meter telescope on Mount Hamilton and the MOS ( M ulti- O bject S pectrograph) also located on the Shane prime focus. The biggest project we've ever built here is the HIRES ( HI gh R esolution E chelle S pectrometer). This spectrograph is mounted on the Keck 10 meter telescope. Our latest project is the DEIMOS ( D eep E xtragalactic M ulti- O bject S pectrograph). It was installed on the Keck II telescope in spring of 2002 and saw first light on June 3, 2002.
